Selecting Tools for Bakelite CNC Machining? Just Remember These Key Points—Keep It Simple!

Tool Material:

Just use carbide tools (commonly called tungsten steel tools). They’re affordable and durable. Bakelite isn’t extremely hard, but it may contain impurities like fiberglass, which can chip high-speed steel tools. Tungsten carbide holds up better.

Tool Geometry:

-Roughing: Use flat-end mills for high efficiency, ideal for large material removal.

-Finishing: For smooth surfaces, single or double-flute spiral mills work best—they provide stable cutting and reduce burrs.

-Grooving/Engraving: For fine details, use ball-nose or tapered tools for precision.

Number of Flutes:

Don’t overdo it with multi-flute tools! Bakelite tends to clog, so 2-3 flutes are ideal. Too many flutes hinder chip evacuation, causing overheating and gumming up.

Speed & Feed:

-Spindle Speed: Can be relatively high (e.g., 15,000–24,000 RPM), but don’t go overboard or the material may scorch.

-Feed Rate: Keep it moderate—too fast risks chipping, too slow wears the tool prematurely.

Additional Tips:

Bakelite machining produces heavy dust—always use a vacuum to avoid choking hazards.

If the board contains fiberglass, tool wear accelerates, so keep a couple of spare tools handy.
