Beginner's Guide to CNC Machining Nylon Plates

1.Understanding Nylon Plates

Nylon plates are slightly flexible plastic sheets with a smooth surface. They are not as hard as metal during machining but are much stronger than ordinary plastics. Common colors include white and beige, with thicknesses ranging from a few millimeters to several tens of millimeters.

2.Preparation

Material Selection: Choose based on your part's requirements—use MC nylon for wear resistance and PA66 for higher strength.

Workholding: Secure the plate with double-sided tape or clamps. Avoid excessive clamping force, as nylon can deform.

Cutting Tools: Use sharp carbide tools. Dull tools can cause melting and material buildup.

3.Machining Tips

Spindle Speed: Moderate speed is best—too fast can cause overheating and melting, while too slow results in a rough surface.

Feed Rate: Slightly faster than for metals, but avoid aggressive cuts to prevent tool deflection due to nylon's elasticity.

Cooling: Air cooling is preferred. Water cooling can be used but sparingly, as nylon absorbs moisture.

Depth of Cut: Can be deeper than for metals, but avoid overly aggressive passes.

4.Important Notes

Ensure proper ventilation—machining produces a noticeable plastic odor.

Edges tend to burr; leave some extra material for a finishing pass.

Clean the machine immediately after machining—nylon chips stick everywhere.

Allow time for dimensional relaxation before final precision machining—nylon tends to spring back slightly.
