Calcium alginate wound dressing is a medical dressing made from a natural polymer material extracted from brown algae. It exhibits strong water absorption, hemostatic function, and promotes wound healing. Upon contact with wound exudate, it forms a soft gel, maintaining a moist healing environment, reducing dressing change pain, and facilitating granulation tissue growth and autologous debridement.

This type of dressing is suitable for wounds with moderate to large amounts of exudation, such as venous ulcers, pressure ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, donor site wounds, and some burns or post-operative wounds. The calcium ions released by it can activate the coagulation cascade reaction, helping to control minor bleeding, and therefore it is also commonly used in the care of surgical or traumatic bleeding wounds

Calcium alginate dressings are typically in the form of sheets or strips, with a texture similar to non-woven fabrics. When used, they can be cut according to the size of the wound and filled or covered onto the wound surface, and then secured with secondary dressings such as gauze. The frequency of replacement depends on the amount of exudate: daily replacement in the initial stage, which can be extended to 1-2 times per week as the exudate decreases, with a maximum duration of no more than 7 days.

It should be noted that alginate dressings are primarily intended for use on clean wounds without necrotic tissue. If the wound contains black scabs, pus, or deep cavities (>0.5cm), professional medical staff should perform debridement before using the dressing.
