Proper installation is the key to getting the maximum service life out of your new separator, and there are a few simple steps that many technicians overlook. Before installing the new unit, take the time to completely drain and thoroughly clean the oil sump to remove any accumulated sludge and debris that would otherwise clog the new separator immediately. Always inspect and clear the oil return tube, as a clogged return line is the single most common cause of premature separator failure, and never use any type of sealant on the gaskets, as melted sealant will quickly block the return tube and cause catastrophic oil carryover. Tighten the housing bolts evenly and by hand only until the gaskets seat firmly, as over-tightening can warp the stainless steel flange and create permanent leaks.
