These particles are dispersed within the resin system prior to coating application. The primary mechanisms for performance improvement are: 1) ‌Pore-filling effect‌: Nano-particles occupy free volume and micro-voids in the cured film, reducing permeability to oxygen, water, and chloride ions, thereby improving barrier properties. This can extend salt spray resistance (ASTM B117) by 20–50% compared to conventional coatings. 2) ‌Surface energy modification‌: The addition of certain nano-oxides can lower the surface energy of the coating, improving dirt pickup resistance and facilitating water beading. 3) ‌Mechanical reinforcement‌: The high surface area and strong interfacial interaction between nano-particles and the polymer matrix can increase coating hardness (measured by pencil hardness or nano-indentation) and scratch resistance. 4) ‌UV stabilization‌: Nano-TiO₂ acts as a UV absorber, reducing photo-oxidative degradation of the polymer, which is reflected in improved QUV weathering test results. It is critical to ensure proper dispersion of nano-particles to avoid agglomeration, which can create defects. The performance claims of "self-repairing" often refer to the ability of some nano-capsules (containing healing agents) or ion-exchange pigments to provide active corrosion protection at coating defects.
