A Truck Dropside Pillar Latch (often called a "Pillar Lock" or "Kinnegrip style" latch) is a professional-grade locking system where the latching mechanism is built directly into the vertical support posts (the pillars) of a flatbed or tipper truck.
While a standard dropside latch is just a handle on the panel, a Pillar Latch is a structural part of the truck's frame. It allows the sideboards to lock into the corner or center posts, and often allows the posts themselves to be removed for a completely clear loading floor.
These systems are more complex than simple toggle latches. They typically feature:
Internal Rods: The handle on the pillar moves internal rods or "rule rods" up and down inside the post.
Two-Stage Locking: * Stage 1: The latch is "cracked" open but still caught, ensuring the heavy sideboard doesn't fall on the operator if the cargo has shifted.
Stage 2: The latch fully releases, allowing the panel to drop.
Removability: In many systems (like the common Kinnegrip K20), once the side panels are dropped, you can flip a second lever to "unplug" the entire pillar from the truck bed, turning your dropside truck into a flatbed in seconds.
The Pillar: The vertical aluminum or steel post at the corners or center of the bed.
The Handle: Usually recessed into the pillar to prevent damage from forklifts.
The Pocket/Socket: The heavy-duty hole in the truck's "side rave" (the edge of the floor) where the pillar sits.
The Keeper/Catch: A small plate on the end of the sideboard that the pillar's internal hook grabs onto.
