What is Incoloy alloy steel 926？

Incoloy alloy steel 926 (UNS N08926 / W. Nr. 1.4529 / INCOLOY Alloy 25-6MO) is a super austenitic Stainless Steel Material containing 6% molybdenum and strengthened by the addition of nitrogen. The nickel and chromium content of this alloy makes it resistant to a wide range of corrosive environments. The alloy is particularly resistant to non-oxidizing acids such as sulfuric and phosphoric acids. The high molybdenum content and nitrogen supply resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, while copper enhances resistance to sulfuric acid.
Incoloy material 926 alloy is a fully austenitic alloy containing 6% molybdenum, which provides superior corrosion resistance in a variety of corrosive, aqueous environments. It replaces conventional austenitic stainless steels (AISI 316 and 317) where they have reached their functional limits. The alloy thus belongs to the category of "super austenitic stainless steels". It can also represent a cost-effective alternative to high-nickel alloys in certain marine and chemical processing environments.

One of the outstanding features of Incoloy 926 alloy is its resistance to environments containing chlorides or other halides. This alloy is particularly well suited to handling highly chlorinated environments such as brackish water, seawater, caustic chlorides and pulp mill bleaching systems. Applications include chemical and food processing, pulp and paper bleach plants, marine and offshore channel equipment, saltworks evaporators, air pollution control systems, condensate gas lines, water supply lines and feedwater heaters for the power industry.

Mechanical Functions

INCOLOY 926 alloy shows higher mechanical function than austenitic stainless steels such as AISI 316L. The alloy has higher design values than lower strength materials such as 316L, allowing thinner sections to be utilized.

Corrosion resistance
INCOLOY 926 is a fully austenitic alloy with excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. Functionality in these categories is typically measured using critical pitting temperature (CPT), critical crevice temperature (CCT) and pitting resistance equivalent (PREN). The corrosion resistance of stainless steels depends essentially on their chemical composition.
In general, the higher the PREN, the better the pitting resistance. However, alloys with similar values may vary considerably in practice, and those with PREN ratings greater than 38 have higher corrosion resistance than austenitic stainless steels. INCOLOY 926 alloy, with a PREN of 47, provides a cost-effective means of avoiding aggressive chloride attack.

Critical Pitting Temperature (CPT) testing consists of exposing a sample to a 6% ferric chloride solution (ASTM Specification G48) and gradually increasing the temperature until pitting occurs. New, unexposed test and fresh 6% FeCl3 solutions are applied at each test temperature. The minimum acceptable temperature for North Sea offshore applications is 104°F (40°C), while in pulp and paper bleaching environments it is typically 122°F (50°C). The critical pitting temperature for INCOLOY 926 alloy has been shown to be 149-158°F (65-70°C).
