SKYSIL H-305 SILICA MATTING AGENT FOR WOOD COATING

Here's a problem we hear about constantly from wood coating manufacturers who work with deep-vessel woods like oak and walnut.

You formulate a matte finish. It works beautifully on maple or birch. But when you apply the same coating to oak, the finish looks uneven.

Some areas are matte. Others catch the light in a way that looks glossy. And sometimes, the wood swells after coating — not immediately,

but after a few days. That's what we mean by "uneven matting and swelling pain points." And that's exactly what H-350 was designed to solve.

1. Large particle size penetration control

Oak and walnut have deep vessels — typically 80-150 microns in diameter. These vessels act like channels that draw resin down into the wood during application.

H-350's particle size sits at 5.5-6.0 microns. When the coating is applied, these particles create a physical barrier at the mouth of the vessel through what's called a

steric effect. They block the resin from settling too deep into the vessel.

The result? The gloss difference between the vessel edge and the flat surface stays under 1.5 GU. No "bright edge" phenomenon. The finish looks uniformly matte

across the entire surface.

2. High oil absorption dynamic adjustment

Oil absorption runs 270-320 g/100g. But the real benefit here isn't about matting efficiency alone — it's about application behavior.

The high oil absorption does two things during application. First, it absorbs volatile amine catalysts (like DMEA) in the resin, which delays surface drying by about 20%.

That extra time allows the coating to flow out and eliminate brush marks or roller lines before they set.

Second, it absorbs residual moisture that's naturally released from the wood. This reduces the risk of swelling by about 40% (measured against EN 927-5 standard).

3. Anti-sanding mark development

Here's something most matting agent suppliers don't talk about.

When wood is sanded — typically with 320-grit sandpaper — it leaves microscopic scratches on the surface. A conventional matting agent will actually highlight these

scratches, because it settles unevenly into the sanding marks.

H-350's low porosity structure (1.2-1.4 ml/g) reduces competitive adsorption of resin. The matte particles distribute evenly across the film surface, covering the sanding

marks more effectively. In testing, H-350 covered 92% of sanding marks — compared to 65% for conventional products.
