PTFE is formed by free radical polymerization of tetrafluoroethylene. Industrial polymerization is
carried out with stirring in the presence of a large amount of water to dissipate the heat of
reaction and to facilitate temperature control. Polymerisation is typically carried out at 40-80 °C
and pressures of 3-26 kgf/cm2. Inorganic persulfates and organic peroxides can be used as
initiators or redox initiation systems can be used. Each mole of tetrafluoroethylene is exothermic
during polymerization. Perfluorosurfactants, for example perfluorooctanoic acid or its salts, must
be added for dispersion polymerization.

used continuously at 200 °C, with a maximum operating temperature of 260 °C, an extremely
low coefficient of friction, good abrasion resistance and good chemical stability.
