The types of graphite electrodes
Electric arc steelmaking furnaces are generally classified into three types, namely, ordinary power electric furnaces, high-power electric furnaces and ultra-high-power electric furnaces. Corresponding to the power level of electric furnace steelmaking, graphite electrodes are also classified into three types accordingly, namely, ordinary power graphite electrodes (denoted as RP grade), high-power graphite electrodes (denoted as HP grade), and ultra-high power graphite electrodes (denoted as UHP grade). The nominal diameter of the electrode ranges from 75mm to 700mm. The physical and chemical properties of high-power and ultra-high-power graphite electrodes are superior to those of ordinary power graphite electrodes, such as lower resistivity, higher bulk density, higher mechanical strength, smaller linear expansion coefficient, and excellent oxidation resistance.
Selection of Graphite electrodes for AC Arc Steelmaking Furnaces
The diameter of the distribution electrode of the AC arc steelmaking furnace is shown in the following figure. Graphite electrodes of corresponding types should be selected for electric furnaces of different powers. For example, high-power electric furnaces should use high-power electrodes. The selection of graphite electrode diameters for electric furnaces of different powers also varies. Generally, it is believed that for ordinary power electric furnaces, RP electrodes with diameters ranging from 75 to 500mm are chosen. High-power electric furnaces should select HP electrodes with a diameter greater than 300mm. For ultra-high power electric furnaces, UHP electrodes with a diameter greater than 400mm are selected.
