Prepreg cloth (namely prepreg) is an intermediate material made by pre-impregnating reinforcing fibers (such as carbon fiber, glass fiber, etc.) into a resin matrix (such as epoxy resin, bismaleimide resin). Supplied in rolls with a typical width of 300–1200 mm, it is a critical precursor for manufacturing high-performance composite materials.

Key Preparation and Application Processes

The value realization of prepreg cloth depends on two stages:

Upstream preparation: Completed through a series of continuous processes including coating, hot pressing, cooling, film laminating and winding. These processes ensure uniform resin impregnation, stable resin content and intact protection of the release paper.

Downstream molding: The mainstream processes include:

Autoclave molding: The dominant process in the aerospace industry (accounting for over 80% of applications), which ensures high compactness and low porosity by means of high temperature and high pressure.
Winding tube molding (rolling tube molding): A low-cost and high-efficiency process, commonly used in carbon fiber fishing rods. The prepreg is softened by hot rollers, wound around a core mold manually or mechanically, and then cured and shaped.
Other processes: Vacuum bag molding, Resin Transfer Molding (RTM), etc., which are adapted to different cost and performance requirements.
