Hot foil stamping on ribbon and webbing commonly uses an indirect hot stamping process consisting of screen printing adhesive, IR drying, and hot foil stamping. The main reason is that ribbon and webbing are flexible textile materials with woven fibers, surface irregularities, and small gaps. During direct hot stamping, the foil may not make sufficient and uniform contact with the substrate, which can result in incomplete transfer, poor adhesion, or foil flaking.
Unlike paper or rigid plastic sheets, which generally have relatively smooth surfaces, ribbons and webbing are formed by interwoven warp and weft yarns. Their surfaces therefore contain noticeable texture, uneven areas, and small gaps.

As a result, simply increasing the pressure of the hot stamping machine does not always provide consistent foil adhesion across the entire design area.
With indirect hot foil stamping, a specialized hot stamping adhesive or heat-activated adhesive is first screen printed onto the designated areas of the ribbon. The adhesive creates a relatively continuous bonding layer between the woven substrate and the foil.
The basic process is: Ribbon → Screen-Printed Hot Stamping Adhesive → IR Drying → Hot Foil → Heat + Pressure → Foil Transfer Instead of relying directly on the textile fibers for foil adhesion, the foil bonds to the adhesive layer, which helps improve transfer completeness and adhesion.

When direct hot stamping is used on textured ribbon, higher pressure and temperature may be required to achieve sufficient contact between the foil and the substrate.

After screen printing the hot stamping adhesive, the ribbon passes through an IR infrared drying system to prepare the adhesive layer for the subsequent foil stamping process. If the adhesive has not been sufficiently dried, it may cause uneven foil transfer or unclear graphic edges during stamping. Proper IR drying helps establish a more stable adhesive layer and provides consistent conditions for the subsequent roller hot foil stamping process.
