Product Principle: The through shaft receives torque from the inter-axle differential output and carries it to the rear axle input. It rotates continuously whenever the truck moves, at a speed proportional to drive shaft speed and the inter-axle differential ratio. Because it has no gears, its critical features are the 26-spline end fit, the shaft body straightness, and the flange flatness. A loose spline causes clunk; a bent shaft causes vibration; a distorted flange causes runout.
Diagnostic Note: Through shaft failure differs from differential or bearing problems. Watch for: Vibration increasing with road speed, present whether accelerating or coasting — shaft bent or unbalanced. Clunk when releasing and re-applying throttle — 26-spline worn, shaft rotates before transmitting torque. Visible twist or deformation on old shaft — shaft yielded under overload. Metal debris in middle axle oil — spline wearing. Whining or grinding that changes with torque load but not with turning — spline worn or rear axle input coupling damaged. Before replacing, check rear axle input coupling spline for wear. Also check old shaft straightness — a bent shaft may indicate bent axle housing.
